A to Z of Archipelago
A-Z of Archipelago is a collection of decorative fonts that inspired by the richly diverse heritage in Indonesia. Consists of twenty six Roman alphabets that capture the essence and recast the symbol of cultural motifs in a modern structure. We’re very pleased to have accomplished this A-Z of Archipelago collection. After a thorough research and uncountable design experiments, this side-project took us a little more than 10 years to finish. Along the way, there’re a lot of rearrangements of ornaments which represent the 26 letters because we would like to have the right variation to best personify our archipelago without any emphasize on certain ethnic/culture.

It’s hard to believe that more than a decade has passed since we first started this project. Beginning as a simple of idea to creating a collection of decorative fonts out of the many traditional Indonesian motifs in existence, the results of this project have taken us somewhat by surprise.

A major trading destination for some two thousand years, Indonesia has absorbed a hodgepodge of Arab, Indian, Chinese, European and Malay influences, giving us an incredibly rich and diverse heritage. The Indonesian archipelago contains over 300 ethnic groups and hundreds more distinct languages.

As designers, the richness of this heritage is very appealing. Indonesians’ traditional love of ornamentation and decoration is evident in their enjoyment of elaborate ceremonies and beautiful handicrafts. These elaborate motifs are used not only to make objects beautiful and interesting, but also to evoke specific cultural meanings.

We therefore wanted to preserve the complexity of the original symbols while at the same time experimenting with creating something modern out of this wonderful landscape of symbols and motifs. It is often said that less is more, but we did not feel that that would be the case here. Sometimes less is simply less, and more is purely more.

Working on this project in our spare time, devoting time and energy throughout the years, the process turned out to be more difficult than we had imagined. We wanted to showcase motifs from all over the archipelago, so we needed to have a balance of cultures, without any one culture dominating the collection. In their present form, these decorative fonts have passed through many hands, and without question through many trials and errors.

Altogether, it has been a wonderful journey of discovery and exploration for our creative team. We stretched and explored boundaries as we looked for ways to interpret these beautiful old symbols in a modern context, learning more about the richness of Indonesia’s cultural heritage than we ever knew before.

If this book in any way entertains, inspires or simply provides you with a moment of pleasure, then our efforts will have been worthwhile. It is our humble hope that you will enjoy this collection as much as we have enjoyed making it.

Tips-tips berbelanja yang memudahkan pemesanan anda sampai sesuai dengan janji kami:

Setelah anda melakukan pemesanan silahkan lakukan konfirmasi pembayaran pada hari kerja yang sama atau sebelum jam 16.00 wib, jika pemesanan dan konfirmasi pembayaran lewat dari jam 16.00 wib, proses pemesanan akan kami lakukan keesokan harinya.
